Google has officially revealed details of their second generation Nexus 7 tablet, and as expected it’s an impressive piece of kit. Unfortunately for them though, Best Buy stole their thunder when they uploaded a pre-purchase page complete with specification before Google’s Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai had even had chance to welcome his lucky guests to the launch in San Francisco
The new Nexus is once again made by Asus, and who can blame them for sticking to a proven formula after the phenomenal success of the first model, which won fans and awards all over the place. They are sticking to the same slick design, but by slightly modifying the bevel of the case have managed to make it 2mm thinner than the original’s 10.5mm design. At the same time they have managed to reduce the weight from 340g to 290g.
The changes are not all cosmetic though as the new Nexus 7 will be launched with a fantastic 1,920 x 1,200 screen, which ups the pixels per inch from 216 to a whopping 323. Google have beefed up the power with a Qualcomm 1.5GHz quad-core S4 Pro combined with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2GB of RAM, which will ensure the Android 4.3 operating system runs smoothly. The tablet now comes with front and rear cameras with 1.2MP dedicated to face time and a 5MP rear facing camera for when you want to take photographs or make movies.
In terms of connectivity there is Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, 802.11n and even HDMI, just in case you want to watch any of your downloaded movies on your television. You will also find everything sounds better than ever before thanks to the inclusion of stereo speakers with Fraunhofer’s virtual surround-sound technology thrown in for good measure.
You will have to pay a little more for the new models compared to the first generation, but they are still an absolute steal and a lot more affordable than the competition. The 16GB model will set you back £199.99 and the 32GB model £239.99 but these prices will soon drop if last year is anything to go by, so you may want to hold onto your pennies for a few months!
